Rangbhari Ekadashi Date Holi

Rangbhari Ekadashi falls a few days prior to Holi, and is celebrated in the month of Phalguna (March) on the day of Shukla Paksha. On this day, gooseberry trees are also worshiped. Therefore this Ekadashi is also known as Amalaki Ekadashi and Amla Ekasashi.

Narayan is usually worshiped every Ekadashi, but on the Phalguna Ekadashi Mahadeva and Goddesses Parvati are also worshiped alongside Narayan.

What is the historical origin of the tradition of playing Holi with Mahadev and Mata Parvati?

According to the legends, after Mahadeva married Goddess Parvati on Mahashivratri, Goddess Parvati's Gauna was made on Rangbhari Ekadashi day. It is believed that the first time Mahadeva took him to Mount Kailash was via Kashi Vishwanath. This is the time of year when nature is smiling all around because of the spring season. The devotees of Mahadev welcomed Goddess Parvati and Mahadeva with the colors and Gulal. Along with colorful blossoms were showering on them. Since then this day has been extremely auspicious. It is on this day in Kashi that the rituals of worshiping Goddess Parvati and Mahadeva and celebrating Holi started.

Why is Rangbhari Ekadashi celebrated in Varanasi?

It is believed that on the day of Rangbhari Ekadashi, Baba Kashi Vishwanath visited Kashi along with Goddess Parvati and their devotees welcomed her by pouring colors and Gulal. According to Hindu belief, if you perform a special worship of Mahadeva on this auspicious day, you will gain freedom from all troubles and bring happiness into your life. On the day of Rangbhari Ekadashi, Varanasi is filled with a festival atmosphere.  Every year in Varanasi a grand procession of Baba Kashi Vishwanath and Goddess Parvati is taken out on this occasion. Special worship is performed in the Kashi Vishwanath temple afterward.
